Created in an atmosphere of play, Mark's experimental work is infused with camp and kitsch viewed through a queer lens. Drawing upon a 40-year career in avant-garde theater, dance, opera and film, Mark's pieces embrace theatricality, movement, and three-dimensionality. Social commentary often lurks just beneath the surface in any given piece, juxtaposing diverse realities by offering multiple mediums and ideas. The work is influenced by styles both modern and experimental – Pop Art and Surrealism, and Folk and Trash Art. Mark loves working with found objects, memorabilia, discarded and surplus goods and trash, and recently began drawing in pencil and acrylic pen and making prepared computer screens collages. Mark holds a BFA from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
